Climbers
HONEYSUCKLE, HALL’S PROLIFIC (Lonicera japonica Hall’s Prolific).
A rampant evergreen climber with pale green downy leaves on twining stems. From June to September many heavily perfumed white flowers appear, these turning to pale yellow with age. Flowers are followed by blue-black berries in autumn. Planted to ramble over the pergola to provide berries and a more secluded spot with dappled shade to sit under. This variety has done very well with lots of growth and for the first time (2005) plenty of berries. Obviously the insects and bees like the scented honeysuckle but the reel bonus is the fact that the "Hummingbird Hawkmoth" loves to feed from the plant.
HONEYSUCKLE, EARLY DUTCH (Lonicera periclymenum Belgica).
Vigorous form of native woodbine with dark green leaves on bushy twining stems. Purple-red and yellow flowers in May and June fill the air with delightful sweet fragrance. In autumn terminal bunches of bright orange-red berries appear. Again planted over the pergola to give shade and to provide berries but sadly I have planted another one to replace a plant that had died early in it's life but this too is not doing very well. Up to date there has been no berries borne and growth is very slow. I will leave the plant as yet and see what time brings as I hate taking plants out that have not died.
CLEMATIS MONTANA ELIZABETH.
A profusion of very sweetly scented large soft pale pink flowers bedeck the plants in May and June, these being followed by fluffy silver seed heads.
CLEMATIS MONTANA GRANDIFLORA.
A profusion of sweetly scented 4 inch (10cm) pure white star-like flowers with yellow stamens bedeck the plants in May and June, these being followed by fluffy silver seed heads.
